A QUICK WORD FROM MRS. DAVIS....
My students and I were very fortunate this year to be rewarded with a Pollination Project grant. http://www.themaineedge.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=2865:
and http://thepollinationproject.org/grants-awarded/felice-clyne-davis-edith-k-bergtraum-school-flushing-queens-nyc/. We were able to purchase a good deal of enriching fiction and nonfiction literature and other resources that have to do with protecting the environment and all living things. We were able to order a complete set of Al Gore's book, An Inconvenient Truth (Scholastic version) which reminds us that we all have a responsibility to do what we can to reduce our carbon footprints and make the world better, brighter and cleaner. So many thanks to Alissa Hauser, the Executive Director and all of the wonderful folks at the Pollination Project for affording us this wonderful opportunity and for helping provide us with so many rich and rewarding resources. Here's a Huffington Post article about the Pollination Project and a profile of some educators who are considered to be "seeding change." I am very honored to be a part of this important mission.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ari-nessel/20-teachers-who-are-changing-the-world_b_4119128.html
In addition, it has been a blessing to work with many great people from the Jane Goodall Institute's Roots and Shoots program (including NYC facilitator, Roshanah Nabi and Executive Director, Kamillah Martin). http://rootsandshoots.org/content/roots-shoots-students-nycFurthermore, for the past couple of years, Kim Korona and the HEART program (Humane Education Advocates Reaching Teachers) http://teachhumane.org/heart/has been an inspiration to the entire fifth grade students & teachers in creating respect, reverence and responsibility for all living things. We look forward to continuing to work together. So on we go...

You probably heard about all the saving the world stuff, right? And you probably heard about global warming. In the book An Inconvenient Truth Al Gore explains how the human race has slowly been destroying the planet. In class we watched the Inconvenient Truth Movie and it was an amazing experience because we learned a lot of things about how we can help the environment and how we have been destroying our planet with everything we have been doing like using fossil fuels.
This amazing book reveals some experiences that Al Gore had traveling throughout the world to learn more about global warming and the shocking news he discovered. When we were reading this book, we all freaked out and discussed ways to help the environment. We learned a lot from this book, including the solutions to many of the problems. Many countries even started using more eco-supportive, reusable, and healthy ways of energy to power things like cars. (You might want to look in on hybrid cars or read on to find out more about hybrid cars.)
There is a movie based on this book and both resources are starring Al Gore and his brilliance into finding the causes and solutions and effects of global warming. He shows what he understands to the audience in a broken down and understandable way. We even learned some new facts about Al Gore for example he worked on a farm when he was little and he noticed all the pollutions and other issues with the environment. As vice president, he had some power and he did research about global warming and what was happening. He spoke and gave speeches, but at one point no one believed him. They told him not to waste his time on such a useless topic and many people showed their dislike on him by saying rude things. He kept calm and continued his research even after dropped from being vice president. He wrote this book and a film/documentary, "The Inconvenient Truth", and now, we have to believe him. He has done his research and got his facts straight.
