The REAL World
What's going on behind the scenes? People show us one thing, but there's actually a whole different thing going on. So what we did was split our class into six different groups, and each group was assigned a topic to do research on. At first it was just an assignment, until we learned what really happens. So we decided to go more in depth. Like service learning, we learn about the topic than we actually do something to make it right. Behind the scenes is what is going on behind what everyone is showing us. Though I can't tell you here! You have to go to our pages and watch our power points first. I'm telling you, you'll be surprised! No, you'll be very surprised!
Our class was assigned projects to go behind the scenes of companies, to reveal their secrets that fooled customers. We did research, so here's what we found.
APPLE VS. SAMSUNG
Do you know what's been going on lately between these two huge companies? A duel. Yep, you heard me right. A duel. They are challenging each other to see which company can use the least amount of sweatshop workers. Well that's bad, but it's also good because at least one of the companies will use the minimum of people to produce their products. Unsafe conditions. It seems like the war will never end but let's hope that the war will end soon with both sides victorious, and with no sweatshop labor left. See what I mean? Click on the power point presentation below to find out more.
LOVE YOUR DESERTS?
The Palm-Oil committee has been looking at some issues with palm oil. Here's what they have to say:
Recently, two girls from Girl Scouts found out that Palm Oil was used to make their delicious cookies. They were just absolutely devastated; they wanted to let people know. Those two brave girls from Girl Scouts were really angry because they knew Palm Oil was killing animals that live in the forest like orangutans. The two girls got many people to sign their petition, including Jane Goodall. Palm Oil has caused a lot of problems for the environment. Even though it is good for you, it still has it's pros and cons. Did you know that Dunkin Donuts used Palm Oil in their donuts?! Well, we don't want to say boycott, but you might not not want to support their choice. In order to let them know, we have to give our votes. When we had the heart program, we learned that our money is like our vote. We use it to tell the company to continue what they are doing because we like it. Our job is to find alternatives to situations like this. maybe you do want to boycott, it's your choice. Since that was our job, we have found an alternative! Drum roll please... Introducing the Doughnut Plant! This donut shop, that saved many donut lovers, is called Doughnut Plant. They are located in Manhattan. The website states: DOUGHNUT PLANT DOUGHNUTS ARE HANDCRAFTED EVERY DAY USING THE FINEST INGREDIENTS AVAILABLE. WE MAKE ALL OF OUR OUR JAMS AND FILLINGS. WE NEVER USE EGGS, PRESERVATIVES, OR ANYTHING ARTIFICIAL AND OUR DOUGHNUTS CONTAIN NO TRANS FAT. WE DO OUR BEST TO KEEP STAPLE FLAVORS IN OUR SHOPS, BUT ALL DOUGHNUTS ARE SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY. This shows that Doughnut Plant doesn’t use Palm Oil or eggs or any artificial. This makes a difference because if people start to boycott products with palm oil, people may stop making their products with palm oil, but be careful you shouldn’t keep these doughnuts for so long, so eat it quickly!
HERSHEY'S, GOOD OR BAD
The sweet creaminess of Hershey's chocolate fills your mouth. You think, there could not be a single thing in this world wrong with Hershey's chocolate. WRONG!!! There may be nothing wrong with the ingredients of these treats. Though the worst thing about it is how it is made. Little children, even younger than ten have to make our chocolates. Someone is paying that price and that's those children. This is called child labor and this is happening all over the United States and even the world and we have to put a stop to this because the only ones who are suffering are the children.
You're probably thinking, WOW they have the best job ever! Working at a chocolate factory! SWEET, no literally. Well that's not how those kids feel, they don't even get to taste the chocolate they make! They have to crush the coco beans into a powder and have to work in horrible conditions just so a bar of chocolate can get to us. Not so sweet after all, huh? Well this is what the Hershey's Committee, has to say about this problem...
BEHIND YOUR CLOTHES?
Sweatshop, sweatshop, sweatshop. What is a sweatshop? A sweatshop is a factory or workshop in the clothing industry workers are paid at low wages, and bad conditions. SO in this presentation, we are going to show you some clothing companies that have sweatshops. Do you know the company “Abercrombie and Fitch?” Well you know the owner of “Abercrombie and Fitch,” told the news that the clothing that they make are only for skinny people. Also you know what else, “Abercrombie and Fitch,” use sweatshops. Can you imagine that? A very famous company with all of that trouble? Well “Abercrombie and Fitch,” isn’t the only company that uses sweatshop. There are still many more companies that use sweatshops.
Probably not all of the companies use sweatshops. The big companies like “Gap,” use sweatshops. Do you know that buying these types of clothes can encourage sweatshop. Do you really want people dying just for making clothes. Do you know that in sweatshops, many people die due to the terrible environment that the workers have to work in. Sweatshops are all around the world, and you never know what will happen.
This, is what our Clothing Brands Committee has to say for an overview. And we (the rest of the class) really enjoyed their presentation and we hope that you like the presentation as well. We are going to be up-to-date with the website everyday, and anything we recognize will be on. Keep posted!
LIKE WHAT YOU DRINK?
It's a hot summer day and the pool even turned into a burning pot of soup. You're parents say, "Jump in the car! Let's visit Grammy and see what's the condition of her pool!" You get in, and there you are, half the way through, with thirst and you realize you have a plastic water bottle. Want to drink it? Think again...
Although the labels say "natural spring water" and stuff like that... what's the real truth? Keep posted to find out the real secrets.
